Mercury & Argus
White marble group of Mercury and Argus by John Graham Lough (d.1876). Argus lying asleep against a rock, Mercury standing over him. On a naturalistic base signed "J. Lough". The sculpture was inspired by the tale of Mercury and Argus recounted in Ovid's 'Metamorphoses'. (1:668-721). Mercury was sent by Jupiter to slay the Giant Argos Panoptes, whose prisoner was Lo (one of Jupiter's loves). Here we see Mercury having successfully lulled Argus to sleep with music from his pan pipes before killing the giant and rescuing Lo. 160cm with Base.
